Fishing the Towers, Deli Ledge and Places in Between

Fishing with friends June 22, 2012. Departure 5:00 AM. Everyone arrived on time or a little early! Of course the normal thing, even when you're leaving at 5:00 AM, is to wake up at 1:30, 3:00, and then again at 3:30. So, you might as well leave at 3:30! When you're fishing 80 miles off-shore, there is a bit of excitement, and of course a great deal of preparation for everyone involved. That includes: Fuelling the boat, food, bait, tackle preparation, weather predictions and sea-state determination,SST/current evaluation and trip destination planning, ice, rigs, boat maintenance, and on and on. There is a great deal that goes on behind the scenes, and right there in front of it all too. There's a alot of work during the fishing day.... ALOT. So, if you don't like to work hard to have some real fun and a great lifelong experience, take up another hobby. Much of the satisfaction is in the execution of the work to enable an enjoyable trip. Which means a safe trip, beautiful day, minimal problems, and of course some exciting fishing action. We certainly had one beautiful day. Caught several nice dolphin, some amberjack, and missed some really large fish including a big wahoo, and who knows what else was on the line that was a conservation long-distance release. We really tried a lot of different places today, including the following: R-7, R-8, Sow-Pen, Deli Ledge, Snapper Banks, HH Tire Reef, miscellaneous weed patches spread from Calibogue sound (didn't try those in close) all the way out to the Deli. Most were inshore due to the unusually East Wind all of the first part of June. We even had our crew snorkelling and spear fishing around the R-8 Navy tower with a shot at some snapper of the legal variety, but no luck, only amberjack. Great Crew and Great Fun!
